August 2011 winner of The National Parenting Center 2011 Seal of Approval, the judges reported:

"Geared for families with children of all ages, our testers gave great reviews to this very unique and ambitious game. Game may not be the best term for Teamwork and Family play as what it really did was get families talking and sharing like never before. Families reported learning interesting things about one another that they never knew before. Let's face it teens and pre-teens aren't always the most open when it comes to conversations with their parents. These cards found a way to bridge the divide and get real conversations started. Each card is loaded with fun activities, many of them based on the pillars of Character Counts. Parents like that there were often brain teasers that required some serious thought about completing each activity. This would also be wonderful for leaders of Scouts, church groups and the like."

What the first family to purchase Teamwork and Familyplay™ said in July 2011 before we knew it won The National Parenting Center 2011 Seal of Approval:

"My family has enjoyed using the teamwork and family play cards for a couple of years now. They are a great way to start a family discussion around the dinner table, and we've learned some interesting things about each other. Teens and pre-teens don't always want to engage in family conversations. The cards are a comfortable way to get a conversation started, and everyone can participate equally. So if your child or teen says everything is "fine" and he or she spent the day doing "stuff", pull out a card and have a fun conversation." - Deb Dauphinais

    Learn By Doing Activities

    Learn By Doing Activities

A sampling of the 12 "Learn By Doing" Activities:

  • Ice Breaker
Using the face value (number) on their card, players share that number of comments about who they are to the group.
  • Inspirational Quotes
"A strong positive mental attitude will create more miracles than any wonder drug." Patricia Neal, Actress. Participants select their favorite of two character quotes on the cards, express their thoughts and feelings about it, then share their own stories. Encourage participants to tell their own stories, definitions, ideas or goals about the inspirational quote on their card.
  • The Big Question
"What would you do if you were invisible for a day?" Is one of the fun conversation starters and get to know you ice-breaking activities. Each player shares their answers to the "The Big Questions", exchanges cards and repeats with the another person.
  • Character Traits
Character Traits: A self-assessment and feedback activity that also works great for interviewing and HR employee engagement.
  • Card Towers & House of Character™
Build assets, capacity and develop 21st century skills of communication, collaboration, critical thinking, problem solving with reflection and debriefing. Participants decide the most important character traits to put on their foundation. Then the team builds a card tower called a "House of Character". Each group ranks their cards from most to least important. Then construct the tallest tower with the cards in a 5 minute period.
  • The Match Game
In this character building activity, teams compete with the 26 mango and 26 lime colored cards. Teams strategize how they will work together and match all the character traits before the other team. The winning team shares their strategy, then both teams discuss which 5 of the 12 character traits they feel are most important and why. Teams reflect and come together to select the most important trait they think the world needs today.
  • Character Card of the Day - Start the day having someone pick a character card and share what it means to them and invite others to share. Then proudly display the card. Everyone practices the character trait throughout their day. At the end of the day, regroup to reflect on the results and how it made them and others feel.

What PTO board members are finding:

"I used the cards last night as the ice breaker for our first PTO board meeting. Everyone enjoyed them. It actually went longer than I planned, but it really got people talking and getting to know each other better which is all good. So I think there is definite interest in having you speak at a PTO meeting this year to do a workshop on the teamwork and familyplay cards. I guess I will be buying that set you gave me! What Deb said when she first saw Teamwork and Familyplay™ in 2009:

"I just thought they looked like fun and I knew my husband really likes inspirational quotes and I thought it looked like something fun to do with the family. It has some fun quotes in here, some fun questions, that can generate some interesting conversations for adults and kids."

What Deb's husband Steve said when she brought Teamwork and Familyplay™ home:

"I was looking through them when they were sitting on the coffee table. There's games and such, but there's quotes and then there's topics you can use in conversation. It's a great way to generate communication or conversation when we're eating dinner rather than us just talking about work."

A note how Teamwork and Familyplay™ by GivaGeta Smiles™ came about:

Are you concerned about how technology doesn't give today's youth the in person social interaction? A grandmother was concerned too. This inspired Jim Cantoni, GivaGeta Co-Founder, to create this derivative of one of our most successful products. The idea came to Jim when the grandmother said she was going to use our Teamwork and Teamplay™ edition of The World's Kindest Playing Cards™ that strengthens teams and leaders with not just her Girl Scout troop, but on Thanksgiving Day with her children and 16 grandchildren. Not wanting her grandchildren to only be playing with their Xbox, WII, and PS2, she wanted to have her family around a table or sitting on the floor talking, playing, interacting and laughing as she remembered growing up. And that is how Teamwork and Familyplay™ came about.
